An exhibition on the Battle of Idstedt 1850
The Idstedt Meditation Hall commemorates with its exhibit one of the greatest battles of northern Europe. On the 25th of July 1850, 36,000 Danish and 26,000 Schleswig-Holstein troops met in Idstedt in the war between Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Over 6500 soldiers died or were wounded and above all the civilian population suffered as well. Idstedt burned nearly to the ground. The battles ended with a defeat for the Schleswig-Holstein troops. The duchy of Schleswig remained for another 14 years under Danish rule. The Meditation Hall gives insights into the personal fates of the soldiers and explores the historical background of the war. From here there are also hiking trails to the German and Danish war burials.
