A legendary stone

The Poppostein - or Taufstein – at Sieverstedt is a large stone burial place from the Neolithic (Age. At this place, the Viking king Harald Bluetooth is supposed to have been baptised by Bishop Poppo in the year AD 965. According to legend, the devil threw a stone at the bishop in anger. The fingerprints of the devil are supposed to be visible to this day in the 17 depressions in the covering stone of the grave. Today researchers explain these depressions as cultic handling in prehistoric days. And whether this Bishop Poppo even existed is not clear, but the stone still carries his name today. A detailed description of the Poppostein and its history can be found here.
