A church for protection and defence

The over 800 year old St. Georg Kirche is the emblem of Oeversee. Its patron saint is the patron of travellers. Among other things, the church served as a destination for pilgrims that went on the “Ochsenweg” from Scandinavia to Jerusalem or Rome. Its location at two important thoroughfares and a path over the Treene also had trade, political and military importance. It served as a defence and sanctuary city for people seeking asylum. Even today one recognises the embrasures in the north of the tower. In the interior, among other things, the altar and the baptistry from the time of the building as well as the vault paintings are worth seeing.
